Climate and geopolitics: how do these factors contribute to rising food prices?

 

Global climate change compounds instability  in the Middle East, collectively affecting food production and supply chains, a new study by the agency Zero Carbon Analytics confirms.

• According to the researchers:

The El Niño phenomenon, combined with armed conflicts, places an additional burden on "already fragile global food systems."

 So-called "climateflation"—the rising costs driven by climate change—will continue to increase, putting resulting pressure on households.

 Among the events in the Western Hemisphere influencing the global rise in prices, the report cited the heatwave in Mexico in 2025 and the drought in that same country in 2023,as well as in Brazil in 2023–2024, and the frosts and drought in the US in 2025–2026.

 Due to these and other factors elsewhere in the world, products such as beef and lamb, potatoes, tomatoes, coffee, and corn, among others, experienced significant inflation between 2024 and 2026, according to the study.
