The number of people facing hunger in 2030 could rise to between 510 and 520 million due to the conflict in the Middle East, according to the Liaison Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Before the crisis began, the projected figure was around 503 million, Oleg Kobiakov, the office's director, said.
It was noted that the forecasts did not take into account other potential adverse factors, such as extreme weather events, that could exacerbate the situation.
Against this backdrop, the crisis in the Middle East could affect other countries through rising energy and fertilizer prices, Kobiakov warned.
