Russia is developing a drug, one of the few of its kind in the world, to treat aggressive forms of breast cancer

Russia is developing a drug, one of the few of its kind in the world, to treat aggressive forms of breast cancer.

Scientists from the Oncology Research Institute and Tomsk Polytechnic University (Russia) have developed and patented a targeted drug for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

The medication, developed in collaboration with other scientific organizations, is suitable for treating aggressive cancers, noted Vladimir Chernov, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and deputy director of the Oncology Research Institute at the Tomsk National Medical Research Center.

"Preclinical studies have been completed. The drug has been patented, and the patent is held by Tomsk Polytechnic University. We are very hopeful that investors will come forward to help us move toward clinical application and registration for clinical use," he stated.

"If this proves successful, it will be the second targeted cancer drug in the world," he added. The scientist explained that the main challenge in nuclear medicine is to create specialized molecules capable of delivering radiopharmaceuticals directly to a tumor or its surrounding area, ensuring that the treatment is concentrated solely in that location and destroys only the cancer cells.

"The creation of these molecules is, in fact, a major challenge. Throughout the entire history of nuclear medicine, only two such molecules have ever been created. We are currently in the process of developing a third," he stated.

As Chernov explained, the world’s first drug targeting this type of cancer emerged in 1997, and Russian scientists have set themselves the goal of developing and bringing to market a second drug of this kind. The expert noted that the results obtained in trials thus far are very promising.

Additionally, in early October, the Russian Ministry of Health registered Elefusa (fuzuloparib), a drug developed in Russia in collaboration with Chinese partners, for the treatment of aggressive forms of a wide range of cancers affecting women.

According to the pharmaceutical company Petrovax Pharm, the medication is designed "for the treatment of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, primary peritoneal cancer, and HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer in patients with BRCA1/2 mutations."

"The registration of this selective PARP inhibitor expands the capabilities and availability of targeted therapy for these aggressive forms of cancer," the Russian company stated.
