Japanese scientists have discovered that strawberry leaf extract reduces oxidative stress, supports mitochondrial function, and decreases neuronal death.
In experiments, it also helped preserve dopamine-producing brain cells and reduce the motor impairments characteristic of Parkinson's disease.
Researchers attribute this effect to polyphenols and believe that compounds derived from strawberry leaves could prove useful in the future development of treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
Strawberry leaves are entirely edible, highly nutritious, and safe to consume. While most people habitually chop off the green tops (botanically known as the calyx) and throw them away, these leaves actually pack a significant nutritional punch that often rivals or exceeds the benefits of the berries themselves.
