Stem cell transplantation helped restore brain tissue in mice following a stroke. Scientists hope this will eventually benefit humans.
Researchers from the University of Zurich confirmed that new neurons formed in the rodents' brains after the transplant and that lost motor functions were restored.
The treatment also improved the condition of blood vessels and reduced inflammation, reports the science news portal ScienceDaily.
The stem cells were produced without the use of animal-derived reagents. This could be significant for the development of human therapies.
Another study found that transplantation was more effective when performed one week after the stroke rather than immediately afterward.
