Diseases transmitted via mobile phones acting as "Trojan horses"

Diseases transmitted via mobile phones acting as "Trojan horses"

Neglecting hygiene when using a mobile phone can lead to serious illnesses, such as staphylococci infections or Escherichia coli, general practitioner Andrei Kondrakhin said.

"A mobile phone is a dirty object, and maintaining hygiene is essential. It can transmit infections. The least severe is Staphylococcus aureus, which causes sores on the face. The most dangerous case is the transmission of E. coli, because we might handle the phone and then—for instance—eat french fries, thereby becoming infected. It can also transmit other viruses, including the flu," stated Kondrakhin.

The doctor recommended cleaning the phone with special wipes at least once a day and avoiding taking it to bed, as well as remembering to wash one's hands and use antiseptics.

The potential for the transmission of Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli via mobile phones was confirmed in a study titled "Mobile phones represent a pathway for microbial transmission: a scoping review," published in 2020 in the medical journal Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease.

The study was conducted by a group of scientists from Bond University in Australia who analyzed 56 independent studies from 24 countries and concluded that mobile phones act as "Trojan horses," contributing to the transmission of microbial infections during epidemics and pandemics.
